We all have that mattress we fell in love with and we don’t want to part with during a move or maybe you are in the process of moving and you just don’t want to have to go mattress shopping. Plus if you are already looking to store several items and furniture then it makes sense to add your mattress to the list during your transition between homes or during the off time from semesters at school.
Mattresses are different than other items you may put into storage and they require some added care to ensure that they do not become damaged or spoiled with mildew and mold etc.
The first thing you will want to do is clean and thoroughly air out the mattress. Moisture is going to be your enemy when storing a mattress. Your mattress is an investment and a nice mattress is usually expensive. Take some time to properly air dry your mattress prior to placing in your Ottawa storage unit to ensure that you preserve the life span of your mattress. The good news is that you don’t have to worry about external elements or even interior ones like storing in your damp basement because all of our storage units at Just Right Self Storage are humidity controlled to provide the even temperature needed for storage of delicate items like mattresses.
The next step you will want to do is wrap your mattress in plastic. Similar to mummies at the museum that have been preserved because they were wrapped up, you can use similar principles with your mattress storage by wrapping your air-dried and clean mattress before placing in your temperature controlled storage facility.
Once your mattress is air dried, plastic wrapped and ready to store you need to get it to the storage facility. Don’t just place it in the back of a truck exposed to the weather outside. Instead, make sure to transport your mattress in a covered moving van or truck. Good news is we have some available to help you move in and they are perfect for transporting mattresses across town.
The final things you will want to do in order to properly store your mattress is to lay the mattress flat rather than on it’s side. Even though some sources will tell you to store it upright to save on space, you should avoid storing a mattress like this for any lengthy period of time. Your mattress structure was designed for laying flat. When you store a mattress upright you are likely going to compromise the structural integrity of the mattress and end up having many lumpy sleeps. It is important not to put anything on top of the mattress for a long period of time so the best thing to do is to put it on top of something else like a dresser or stacked boxes. Of course you can always just put it on the floor (preferably raised up) but that will waste alot of the space in the storage unit above the mattress.
These tips will help you store your mattress properly so that you will be able to enjoy many years of great sleeps after you pull your mattress out of storage when you are ready. Practice these tips when storing your mattress and you will protect your investment – and your back!
