Pretty much everything you don’t use or need any more goes into your garage. It gets thrown in there (literally), with all sorts of different things that are just there collecting dust. It’s usually not a pretty sight and it could be hazardous too. Learn how to store your stuff safely and properly.
You need to survey your garage to see what exactly is stacked away in there. One by one, go through the boxes, the cupboards, the plastic bags and every nook and cranny of your garage.
Then you need to sort stuff out. Decide what you want to keep, what you want to donate or what you want to throw away. There is probably a lot of stuff that’s just sitting there, hopelessly collecting dust and getting older and less useful. You really don’t need to be collecting garbage and dust in your garage, do you?
Next, you can redesign your space by figuring out what really deserves to be in your garage. What do you do the most? Biking? Gardening? Fishing? Then figure out what you really need to use the most. Bike and helmet? Spade and gloves? Hooks and bait? After you’ve done this, you can organize the contents of your garage to make sure the things you want are more easily accessible. You can even invest in cabinets to make that possible.
Try investing in storage solutions, which is simply grouping related items together and always placing them where they are designated to be. A great storage solution is a storage bin for toys and decorations or a sports rack to hang helmets, golf clubs and rackets.
Have a seasonal plan ready. Never forget the seasons when organizing your garage. Label the boxes you have your Christmas decorations in, label the cabinet you have your summer gear in. Don’t mix stuff up.
Make sure you store hazardous items securely. Find high-up or locked away places to store materials that may be detrimental if they got into the reach of the wrong hands. You don’t want your children getting hurt by your failure to secure these hazards properly.
It’s always a good idea to set aside a date to re-organize. The best way to have a clean garage is to keep it clean. Maintain its tidy state after you’ve made the big general clean-out.
