Moving day may be approaching for your young adult to spread their wings and move out on their own. They may be off to college or their first aparment or a job out of town. Whatever the reason, it is time for them to leave the nest and start building their place in the world on their own. The big question now is what do you do with all of their excess stuff and childhood belongings? The place they are moving to may not be big enough for some of their furniture etc. and these items will now have to find a home or become permanent residents of your house. Additionally they may have some childhood items that still hold significant sentimental value or that they may need later in life but not at the present time.
There are several options you can do with your child’s belongings when and after they move although tossing them out likely isn’t one of them. It is a good time to sit down with your young adult and ask them what they would like to do with their stuff and offer some suggestions such as:
- Repurpose items throughout the house such as furniture and desks etc.
- Donate items to a local charity or thrift shop
- Move some items into a storage unit in Ottawa to have accessible but free up space in your home
- Recycle items no longer needed
- Sell some items on classified ad sites
Of course there is always the option to leave their room as is but this extra space in your home can offer some great possibiities for that new candle making room you wanted or setting up a proper guest bedroom or even turning that extra room into a source of income by renting the room out to a student, posting it on Air BnB or opening up a home business such as a daycare.
